We're pretty stoked to be attending WMC Fest this year. Here's what they have to say:

Now in its 2nd year, WMC Fest is quickly becoming a must-attend event for creatives in the Midwest. Its goal is to inspire and enable the creative mind and will feature 20 speakers, 20 designers, and 20 bands over the weekend. Put on by the Cleveland based creative agency Go Media and a host of volunteers, it’s got that homegrown, indie vibe that sets it apart from other major conferences. Come to WMC Fest to network, collaborate, get inspired, learn new tricks, and meet new friends! At the cost of only $15 or less, you can’t miss it!

Not only will it be a great opportunity to meet some great local (and national) talent and hear some great local (and national) music, but this guy will be there to drop some knowledge:

That, dear readers, is Aaron (MF-ing) Draplin. For those of you who don't know, Mr. Draplin runs a studio out of Portland, Oregon. He loves Futura Bold, the color Orange, and hard work. His philosophy is simple. “Work hard. Do good work. For good people.” He got some press a few years ago for a surly little video interview with/about him. We're pretty pumped to hear him talk and maybe meet him. I bet he's got a firm handshake.

But wait, there's more! In addition to great music and speakers, WMC Fest is holding a design show. A bunch of super-talented folks (including Draplin) will be showing their goods and pushing their wares. Most of the spots have been taken, but there's a vote going on to decide the last remaining folks to display their work. We're going for it! Vote for us!

Yeesh.

Whether you're here for the first time, or if you've been wondering where the heck we've been, we're happy you're here.

So here are some things you should know. Bear with us, it's been over a year:

• As you can probably tell, we have a new website. We moved everything over from the old site, changed our email addresses, and basically started over. Hopefully, this will help with updating the site more frequently and keeping you, dear reader, informed on our goings-on. We also re-photographed our work and made sure you knew who helped on everything – we're lucky to work with some crazy talented people. Poke around a bit.

• Sean moved to Columbus, Ohio last year. Most of the new poster work will be for shows in Columbus, but we're still talking with Ryan Dettra, who's in the midst of reviving Café Eleven. Can't wait.

• Dog & Pony will function in much the same way, just from different parts of the country. The biggest difference in the way we work is that we're taking a break from printing our actual posters. After taking a year off and moving across the country, we're not afraid to admit that we've gotten a little rusty. But that's OK with us. For the forseeable future, we'll be handing our files off to the capable hands of The Half and Half. They make a beautiful print and are amazing to work with. Hopefully you'll be as happy as we are with them. This isn't to say we're hanging up our aprons and squeegees for good. Smaller runs and art prints (and maybe the occasional wedding invite) will probably still be printed in our own blood, sweat and tears.

• We went through our inventory and loaded up a brand new shop. We love your support!

• We're on Twitter and Facebook now. Follow/like us! Keep an eye out over there for sneak peeks on stuff we're working on and other goodies.

Alright, that's enough for this. You can count on us to get back on a regular schedule of new posters, other fun projects, music recommendations and anything else we think that you need to know. Thanks again for sticking around. Keep Moving Forward!

Well, we got our copy in the mail the other day, and my oh my does it look awesome! It's a HUGE honor to share pages with our heroes over at Methane and the awesome design team at Disney's Yellow Shoes, among others.

As a special bonus we didn't expect, they included some words about our work, too! The lovely people at Print asked us a series of questions and said that if it was interesting enough and if they had room, they'd include some of the answers. They did...So awesome!

Anyway, check out a few photos down below, but it's way better in print. I was lucky enough to help organize and set up this year's membership drive, Always Summer, a poster show celebrating summer jams. The idea was to have local designers and artists select songs that represented summer to them and then design a poster based on that. We set up shop in an old retail space in the Jacksonville Landing, complete with 50 some odd posters, a pair of DJ's spinning the tunes, delicious beer from Bold City Brewery, food from Native Sun, and a cast of characters talking about the benefits of AIGA membership.

The event was a huge success and was a fantastic way to end the summer. Say hello to the yet-to-be-named-or-even-born child of Tim & Jen McGugan! I'm calling him Doogan for now.

Holy cow, right? Due early next year, this will be the McGugan's first child. Tim claims that he (the kid) will be the first man on mars or end up figuring out how many licks it really does take to get to center of a tootsie pop. We'll keep you posted on those things.

So let's give a round of applause to Tim, he's finally a real boy!

----

On that note, now's a good time to enlighten you all on our plans for the future of Dog & Pony. With Tim's reduced role (you know...getting married, buying a house, remodeling said house from the ground up, having a kid, etc.), you may have noticed more and more collaborations on the latest posters. All of this has really made us re-evaluate the spirit of Dog & Pony and what the future means.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of people doing these posters (or screen printing for fun) in North Florida, and yet I still find myself surrounded by incredibly talented people that WANT to do just that. I don't want to hog – and frankly can't handle – all of the awesome work that Dog & Pony has allowed me to work on, so I've tapped these talented folks to contribute in their own individual ways. From Karen Kurycki's amazing watercolors to Eric Blair, Kendrick Kidd and Caitlin Robinson's ridiculous illustrations, and Crystal Floyd's beautiful photos. These people are so so amazing at what they do, and working them is a true honor. Every poster becomes a whole new experience.

Sure Tim & I will take on our own poster designs, but from here on out we'd like to approach every project as a possible opportunity to work with friends...or someone that may just be a great fit for that project.

If you don't mind my rambling, I'd like to give you a quick example. I was recently given the task of designing a poster for a very special Halloween screening of the 1922 silent Dutch film Häxan by my dear friend Tim Massett – who runs a small independent theatre in Duluth, Minnesota. This is an insane film about witchcraft/witch hunting/the devil. I highly recommend watching it sometime, or at least reading about it. Now, I love witchcraft as much as the next guy (...right...?), but someone who may be able to give me a little more insight and visual inspiration would be the extremely talented Clay Doran and his monsterly persona, Squid Dust. His work speaks for itself, he's perfect for it! And for as long as we've been friends, we've never collaborated. So now's the time. You'll see the poster soon. It was loosely inspired by the song "The Rake" from their newest album The Hazards of Love. It was an interesting and time-consuming experience dissecting the very complex album with Eric and deciding what the focus of the poster should be.

It ended up being a 4-color print with some blue house paint, magenta ink, transparent black ink and a lovely flat black house paint. Printing went off without a hitch.

The show itself was fantastic. The band played through The Hazards of Love in full before going into some older fan favorites. They also threw in a ridiculous rendition of Heart's "Crazy on You" with Shara Wordon and Becky Stark on lead vocals. The ladies stole the show throughout the evening. I have to admit, I slept on this one. Maybe it was the other incredible music that came out that summer...or maybe the album was a grower that I couldn't wrap my head around at the time. Either way, it took 4 years, but I finally get it.

Jim James and Co. made a ridiculously amazing record with catchy hooks, tight melodies, all out guitar jams, and a few slow burners in there for good measure. The band doesn't take themselves too seriously, and everything on the album feels completely natural. Not to mention it has a pretty stellar album cover.

Have a listen to "Lay Low" – a fantastic 6-minute tune that highlights everything I love about the album. James' reverbed near-falsetto voice over the minimalistic opening, a super tight rhythm section, dueling guitars, and a full-bodied and sprawling last-half of the track.

I always seem to point out that you need to listen to these records in their entirety to get the full effect of awesomeness that I'm talking about, and it holds true with this one too. We were honored to make something for these alt/country/punk legends. How convenient that their closest stop to us was Café Eleven! Considering our dear relationship with folks at the Café, we jumped at the opportunity.

We passed the Tallahassee date over to our good buddies at Halftone Def. You should see the poster they did, its awesome...oh here it is! It's always fun to see how different designers approach the same band's music, but it's especially fun when the other designers are your best good friends.

Anyway, check out what we came up with:

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/09/luceropost.jpg"width="500px">
And some details:
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/09/luceropost2.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/09/luceropost3.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/09/luceropost4.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/09/luceropost5.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/09/luceropost6.jpg"width="500px">

It's a spiffy 4-color print: white & orange inks, brown house paint, and transparent ghosty white ink. They named it the address of the building: 826 Valencia. Unfortunately, the city ordinances in the area only allowed for retail space. Interestingly enough, as building renovations continuted, it began to almost look like the hull of a ship. So it was cleverly decided that the storefront would become "San Francisco's only independent Pirate Supply Store." The store is in the front of the space, the writing center in the middle, and offices in the back.

It really is a brilliant idea that was only made better by some of the most clever writing and packaging that went along with the pirate supplies. What follows are some of those products, beautifully designed by Office.

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_12.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_21.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_31.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_41.jpg"width="500px"">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_51.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_61.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_71.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_81.jpg"width="500px">

It didn't stop there. When it was time to expand the 826 writing centers around the country, each center determined what their storefront would be. Boston: The Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute; Chicago: The Boring Store (a secret agent shop), Los Angeles: The Echo Park Time Travel Mart, Michigan: The Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair, New York City: The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., Seattle: The Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co.

Every store has been meticulously designed from the inside-out and each product they carry is so cleverly written and beautifully designed by local artists and designers. Below is just a small taste of the national products.

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_91.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_101.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/826_111.jpg"width="500px">

A wonderful little catalog was released not too long ago by 826 National. Pretty much all of our friends were asking us to print shirts up for them and we were happy to oblige. We started growing our beards for the team and printed up a solid batch of shirts
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/sean.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/tim.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/friends.jpg"width="500px">

Then it got around the office. If you know anything about us, you know that our day job involves doing some actual advertising for the Jaguars. We'd been working on strategies to help sell tickets for the team this year when the big guy upstairs – Jim Dalton, that is – saw Tim's shirt. He loved the idea and saw tons of opportunity for the Jags. He also had a meeting with them that afternoon. Long story short, it was presented to the team and they loved it. We passed along a shirt just in case Mr. Jones-Drew would be interested in wearing it.

Then came the real fun. First MoJo showed up online wearing the shirt to announce a new Facebook contest.
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/facebook.jpg"width="500px">

Then BeardCam shows up at the game. A moving beard shows up on the Jumbotron over people's faces.
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/beardcam.jpg"width="500px">

Then the man himself is wearing our shirt in all it's glory in the gameday program.
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/mojo.jpg"width="500px">

And finally, the big one. The Jags took our logo and had it printed in full color on t-shirts to sell at the game!
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/official.jpg"width="500px">

That took a little of the burden off our backs of hand-screening our image onto shirts for random people we don't know, and it helps the Jags make the money they need. The shirts look super nice, and we couldn't be more proud. We've printed a lot of shirts ourselves to get the idea out there and for all those that wanted to Support the Movement, but seeing the concept and design embraced by our team and the fans is so much more rewarding. It really just goes to show that a good idea and a solid execution can really go places.

And yes, we're still printing shirts.
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/dalton.jpg"width="500px">

Support the Movement.
Dog & Pony Showprints

Gil & Amy pt. 2

As promised, here are some more detail shots of Gil & Amy's wedding invitations. This particular session revolved around Andy Warhol and his portrait work. Each student sat in front of some harsh studio lights while another student photographed them. They were left to completely decide how their portrait would look. Some went straight-faced, some went crazy.

They brought their portraits into Photoshop, adjusted the brightness and contrast (and in some cases, the size of their eyes) and we burned the images onto screens. While the screens were burning (2 at a time) each student, using printouts of their portraits for reference, created stencils through which they hand-painted colors and patterns onto paper. This would make each print unique, much like Warhol's portraits. Sean did a horrible job documenting the whole affair, but thankfully several of the students took plenty of photos. See below.

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/light1.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/light2.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo1.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo2.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo3.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo4.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo5.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/paint1.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo7.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo8.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/demo9.jpg"width="500px">

Gil Samson & Amy Ploss

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/samson3.jpg"width="500px">
Photo: Laura Evans

Gil and Amy are probably the coolest people you could ever meet. They have impeccable taste and style, and I (Sean) have been fortunate enough to become friends through mutual friends and events/drinking sessions. So when Varick approached me about screen printing the invites for their upcoming wedding, I jumped at the opportunity. Quick sidenote, Russel absolutely killed it on their website, right? Sheesh.

Anyway, these wedding invites wouldn't be your regular ink on paper invites...why would they? The couple had the brilliant idea of transferring Varick's beautiful design onto quaint little pieces of balsa wood. I'm game for a challenge, but this one seemed kind of ridiculous, especially with 6 colors. Nevertheless, over a period of 2-or-so weeks, Varick, Jenille and I spent several sleepless nights cranking 120 of these things out. Gil eloquently tells his version of the story here. The finished piece is pretty stunning and totally different than any wedding invite you'll get for the rest of your life.

Below are a couple sneak peeks of the invites. Since most of the invitees haven't received them yet, I'll wait until later to show the rest.

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/samsonpost1.jpg"width="500px">
<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/samsonpost2.jpg"width="500px">

Support the Movement

We made a shirt for Tim to wear to Jags training camp. As you probably know, he's formed yet another band: The Dead Weather. They really are fantastic, and we strongly recommend a listen. Upon listening to this newest effort, I couldn't help but revisit Mr. White's last "new band," The Raconteurs.

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/08/racs.jpg"width="500px">

They easily convinced me that they knew what they were doing at a pretty mindblowing performance at Bonnaroo a few years back, but I had never really spent the proper time with either of their albums. Their debut, Broken Boy Soldiers, was solid at best — but the sophomore effort, Consolers of the Lonely, truly floored me. I think that's all there really is to say about it, so have a listen to 2 songs from the album. The rocking album opener, "Consoler of the Lonely," and the lush and beautifully brilliant "Old Enough."

This also gives us a great opportunity to throw in a little of our personal inspiration. Rob Jones has been working with Jack White for several years now, creating posters for damn near every one of his shows for every one of his bands. His style and limited color palette suit the Jack White aesthetic so beautifully. Working through a growing sickness and coming off a week of partying in Portland, she killed it on 30 or so sheets of hearty 12"x18" watercolor paper. Yes, she created that heart and skull icon that we all wanted tattood on ourselves at one point.

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/06/alk1.jpg"width="500px">

<img src="http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/789139/9321695/files/2009/06/alk2.jpg"width="500px">

She's also an awesome fine artist in her own right! Long story short, she married Tom Gabel a little while ago and they recently moved to St. Augustine. When we did that poster for Tom's acoustic show at Café Eleven, we were lucky enough to meet Heather (as she did all of Tom's merch and was obviously hanging out to support her dude). She approached us not too long later to produce two prints for an upcoming print show she will be a part of. We were honored to give it a shot!

It was a totally surreal experience. Working with someone else's art (especially when already admire the work and they have a pretty established "style") is stressful. We were constantly battling the medium and limitations of screen printing versus matching the original art as closely as possible. Everything worked out and the final prints turned out awesome!
